Clean water campaigners the Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) and the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) are delighted with the news that six major retailers have agreed to implement new labelling on cotton bud packaging following persuasive action by both groups. The new measures will encourage customers to ‘Think Before They Flush’, and help prevent these items from washing up on the nation’s beaches. There are now 10 major retailers currently using or about to phase-in the clearer labelling across the UK.

It’s election day in Guernsey and SAS are urging the electorate to vote for those candidates that support a move away from the raw sewage ‘pump and dump’ philosophy currently used on the island.Earlier this week SAS campaigners went ‘turdabout’ in Guernsey, by dragging a giant inflatable poo around Bellegreve Bay from the back of a R.I.B and then descending on St Peter Port’s high street to leaflet voters on which candidates support full sewage treatment.

...an Orangeman in a grass skirt? No, you get George Freeth, often billed as the "first surfer in the United States". Apparently, Georgie's old man hailed from Ulster and fell for a Wahine after he emigrated to Hawaii. The offspring of their loins turned out to be a rather interesting dude. As inscribed on a memorial statue at Redondo beach in California...

Beach Bum's blogDIY Surfboard Kits From Grain & Magicseaweed

read the rest of this blog post

No, it's not the wing of an outsized model aircraft - it's a Grain Surfboard in assembly. Produced in Maine from a company with a background in boat-building, you can now buy these wooden boards in kit form from Magicseaweed - their new (and exclusive?) European distributor. Using white & red Cedar from sustainable suppliers you buy a kit that includes board frame, cedar planks and rail strips, fin box, leash plug, glue, epoxy, fiberglass (sic), rubber gloves and more. Every step of this process has been thought through and is detailed in our 40 page instruction manual. Each board takes approximately 60 hours to build, but will be around for a lifetime of waves.

SAS's blogSAS’s Spring Beach Cleaning At Porthtowan

read the rest of this blog post

Arh, spring is in the air. The sun has been doing it’s best and the beach is back on the list of places to go to. However, since you were last there, winter storms, big waves and strong South Westerly winds have driven millions more pieces of marine litter onto our beaches. Because of this, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) campaigners are organising a spring beach clean at Porthtowan on the 23rd of February, starting at 10.30 outside the Blue Bar.

Whilst "eco-friendly" surfboards (I'm referring to the variants that use alternative foam and resin formulations) have been on the radar here for many moons, they haven't really gotten close to being mainstream - yet. Perceived price, cheap pop-outs from Chinatown and performance issues may have stalled acceptance but actually finding board shops that will sell you something greener is rather hit and miss.
