As surfers we like to think of ourselves as an environmentally friendly crew, connecting with nature and enjoying a magical experience powered solely by the elements. Once our session is over we emerge cleansed and invigorated, leaving no trace and no waste... or do we?

On the whole, us surfers are pretty eco-aware, but we do have an impact on the environment in the pursuit of waves – travel. Most surfers use a car to get to the beach or a plane to get to the more exotic locations, both of which produce carbon emissions which contribute to global warming.

A 1.4 litre car, your typical surf banger, that averages 200 miles per week produces roughly 3 tonnes of carbon a year. The impact of this could be offset by planting 4 trees... so go on, try the calculator and see how many trees you need to plant.

This is not the ultimate solution, but it does help – dig it?
