are there gonna be some waves soon?

By john cockerell at 2:44pm on 20th Aug, 2006

to all i live up in hertfordshire, when i do come down the coast i do try to be curtious, not that all down there are but as i'm not in the water as much as you lot don't allways catch as many waves, maybe due to some snaking? but i do wish that there would be some more waves over this period as the water is a bit warmer now!so please be kind to us aswell.

me at burleigh heads qld oz

The surf reports are

The surf reports are useless.

I've just been down to Newgale, it said the report said basically no waves today.

Bloody hell!! Some waves were coming in at 8ft+ !! Fairly choppy though.

aint that always the way?

sounds a bit unrideble

Not really, was good fun, ok

Not really, was good fun, ok they werent clean, but was fun trying to catch some of the waves!

Sorry, they were 4ft, i was using the wrong measurement system.

HAHAHAHa my arse!

8ft my ass!

Probably wasnt even 4ft. Since when did Herts get a 2ft wave in summer, comon mate North Cornwall barely had a day over 2ft in the last few months.

dont you mean inches?

if you knew where herts was

if you knew where herts was you would know that there was definitely no waves in herts durr!

Herts

I have no idea where herts is, im not pretending to, and i dont want to know. Growing up in North Yorks, then living in the South West, i have no intention of going there.

Why refer to surfing and Herts then. Durghh!"#

:)::(:)

wasn't refering to herts was

wasn't refering to herts was talking about the south west because i was heading down there. Also it was two years ago so ...
ner ner ner ner ner durrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
only kiddding mate pulling yours to get a rise outta you!

Its now feb 08 and still no

Its now feb 08 and still no consistent swell, dont you just hate fair weather. And we still have the summer to deal with:(

no waves,wind,banks,weather etc =no surf

its a global problem , travelling is just part of the fun but arriving and being told "you should have been here yesterday" is just not funny. Being at work and knowing that after work or the weekend would be unsurfable and it is right now on the webcam. Getting there and finding a group is calling it "ours" because they got there first and theres too many of them to even enjoy sharing the experience - is also not fun.

The answer - expensive but maybe in the long run cheaper - a wave pool.

Its just a way of starting to think of the idea but in southern england how many people each day would be available to surf a half decent wave pool each day and shoulder times to "dog watch session -11pm to 6am"?

No developer will ever really get anywhere unless the consumers show there is a demand. Then Competition amongst the potential developers will come up with ideas and strategies to satisfy that demand. The consumers (in this instant surfers) will rule as they as customers will at the end of the day provide patronage or not.

So do surfers want to be heard by the ones who have the skills and motivation ? (usually profit but not always only) its easy to tell anyway.

So what do surfers tell that they want for 24/7 Eden type dome containing a tropical rainforest, accomadation, coaching , training and video feedback on style, effect and all of what develops good surfing skills.?

Then surfing untill your feet will keep you upright no more.

We all hopefuly have had sessions like that and know what it does to our prowess in the water on any wave thereafter.

How do we find this all out to start what might be a lengthy process along such a path?

But one that starts where it should start with those who are to be satisfied by such a facility.

y'all

what are everybodys thoughts on the matter?

bobby-boy just cant stop thinking!

any answers amongst this forum?

y'know the axiom

"if this dont change they will stay the same"

just an list of why such a thing should NOT be attempted is the best place to start!

Waves

Well the SW has had loads of waves, its been amazing recently and some of the beaches have the best banks i have ever seen.

I dont know who these people claiming that there are no waves are but they obviously havent actually looked at any surf down here recently!

Fun and games ahead for the weekend and loads of Student kooks to run over too!

Bobby are you nuts, you must live in a city! I couldnt think of anything less appealing, if people with that opinion all stayed in wavepools, we (at the coast) would all be much happier!

yey!

Party on people!

Piss off!

Another weird wave pool guy - why don't you just be straight? like: I run a company www.barbusters.com.au and I'm trying to promote my idea of gated communities based around a communal wave pools and in the end we want to make money through these developments - there's nothing wrong with saying that just be honest. Don't treat these forums like they're full of morons.

An email to me from Robert Sirasch: who the down2earth gmail account is registered to...

-----------------------

I have come to the conclusion that this benign intevention after qualifying
and quantifying will be a very cost effective way of grooming the pitch or
taking the edges off sandbanks that cause grief.

I am telling you this in confidence and am willing to share the information
with you and your subscribers in a very quite subdued way
that does not
offer any false promise just apath to sustainabilty.

I wish to sincerely apologise for knowing about some the inappropriate posts
that you kicked and I have done something about moderating the source and
making sure that it does not happen again. (as the last post I made)
the gmail account is accessable by a few people as was the account on your
website.

------------------------

So bobby or down2earth - your constant spamming of the site has been a real pain in the arse and an abuse of a open community forum for sly marketing and advertising while slandering your compeditors ASR. This has been a head ache for me and unpleasent for others who use the forums.

Bollox to shareing information in a subdued way (I mean what are you on about?) just be honest or piss off.

I've told you that you can publish articles about your wave pool technolgy, you'd be more than welcome - I'm sure that they'd make interesting reading. But enough of this idiotic ruse, it's boring and confusing. It's very obvious when people pretend to be something their not in a forum.

Nice one Sam!

I couldnt agree more, like a real surfer would want to sit in a concrete bottom chlorinated wave pool!

:)

Fistral last weekend!North Fisty at high tide last weekend! Fuck wavepools!(from the South-West gallery)

well I asked for for it and cant complain that i got it.

barbusters is not a company it is a initiative by volenteers that no one in years of work has been paid a cent for. It is intended to be self funding and produce results for boaters at dangerous bars and the research learnt meant to be free for all to use ie public domain.

the .com for the name instead of .org was what the sponsor provided and please dont take the name barbusters too seriously as its just a "code name" for a community initiative that is and always will be not for profit.
that I hopes takes care of the "greed' side of the "flack"

now lets look at the other things one point at a time

now the riverisland site i will take my medicine

that has nothing to do with me or the community group i volenteer for but I agree with the type of pool it does seem to have great merit in its possibilities.
so no companys but riverisland is nothing to do with me -just a site found on this site and introduced to all by fred.

yes the gmail site was registered to me but I am not the only person with access to it and was not responsible for any stupid posts using it. I didnt know some of the stuff going on but it is halted now.

competitors - umm if you have worked for free in community organisations for 10 years who do you compete with?
no you got that really wrong but keep it comming I deserve a earbash for allowing some of the crap to happen

?

Why bother in the first place!

why bother

its not all about money - i learnt long ago working on my own good achievements have their own rewards and you never starve or lack anything as many many people benefit from good achievements.

money - the root of all evil.

oh sharing the sandgrooming idea

ok it was a little bit of information that I hoped you could be discrete about and its just as well out in the open and we better not see any little greedy pigs try and patent it for their own gain. its meant to be "public domain" for all to learn a little about

I hope that with our research and development that a jetski and a implement can get the rough edges off good sandbanks/rip junctions ie for a few bucks surfers can care for their own breaks with a small bit of benign intevention, when sand builds up at the end of a rip and the wave closes out there -that can be "swept" sideways to the front of the sandbank and that promotes a "peak" long before it reaches the bank. any harm there -no just wave improvements and back to what nature wants in the time it takes. As nature will do everytime there is swell and rips.

Cost - peanuts and a lot of fun learning along the way about what is the best sustainable sandbank for a set of circumstancesand wave breaks. Governace -yes a 3d before and after but before the work all get to look at the 3d for their beach and decide what if anything can be done . progressive authorities with that governace will interact and approve.

so everybody thats for sharing and if anyone looks at the part of barbusters that says help wanted you will be encouraged to participate .

screwed in the head asr critic

yes i know one and he is gone,he no longer has access to anything that uses the down2earth and no more access to VPN and my ip address on my server.

ASR - sorry they are in the commercial field of business and that is not what I am involved in.

The round pool idea -well so far we hear its not what real surfers want -ok I hear that and I need to know as i am looking at commercial possibilities there - but if you read my other post on pools you would see that I believe that square and round pools can cooexist and will coexist as they each have their own special attributes.

What is it you guys do when nature does not provide waves? fresh water no - since i started surfing the dream was always for a training facility and to surf on a wave myself until I could stand up nomore. call me a pool freek but that seems better than sitting around bored and wishing nature could provide?

The people who chase tidal bores get to surf on a wave til they can stand up no more -but the waves just dont seem to much quality -just quantity

bobby _boy is down2earth40

down2earth40 is registered to robert sirasch and if you look at his post it is a moderate one. And in a email to you the identity of the
registered owner of down2earth40 is robert sirasch which purposely was not withheld.
sorry forgot to mention that yesterday - just getting it all right.

Ermmmm?

In one ear and out the other....

It's all double dutch to me mate. I love crazy inventions but I think they best way to explain all of this is to write a detailed article with diagrams and relative links.

I'll proof read it and format it - but at the moment you're just cobbling bits of info together in a nonsensical way.

It's difficult to understand.

i'm trying to address each critism one at a time.

If you look at the barbusters site and carefully read what its about you will understand that for a very low cost sandbanks can be "shaped" for safe passage of craft and also provide good wavebreak shape.

This technology was developed at the university of strathcyde by civil engineers needing to provide 3rd world countrys with low cost solutions. The research is on the "downloads " section.

hmm?

I want one of these in my wavepool!if only wavepools delivered this, i might be interested!(from the South-West gallery)

Confused the hell out of me and im nearly a chartered civil & structural engineer. Might be best to make your points in some form of order as Sam says!

hello rob m

ive been a self employed and independent chartered civil structural engineer since 1975. I am willing to share any of my experience. Just went to a really good presentation last night by Ove Arup on their design of the Bejjin "cube" nice stuff the team was headed by one of our own "hometown" boys and it was really exciting stuff to see how it was designed to be like a "foam" or "bubbles" joined together.

you are right about the wave -yes that would be nice but how realistic do you think it is to get that amount of energy on demand?

big call !

but when i asked "watercube" team leader about the greatest lesson learned on the project he said "nothings totally ever imposible from conception to design" and he said dare to dream. But the bridge between dream and reality is a serious one and many many engineers and simulations in a very rigourous way are necessary to bridge that gap -do you know Arup? AND THE "WATER CUBE"?

Arup

My friend works for Ove Arup in the UK where i am based. I however work for a different group but self employed (consulting). I will look up the watercube on my dinner!

sorry was taken a bit aback by the deserved "serve"

points i needed to clear up was the competition , commercial stuff as that not the case.

the idea of sandbank grading -yes i really fear that someone will try and make it a commercial product and attempt to lock it up for themselves - but fortunately plow-dredging or "sweeping" sand has been around for long enough. Maybe we might see some progress in really good effective accurate ways of keeping sand behaving in a pattern that also makes for good wave shape.

by the way

thanks for being candid and "speaking your mind" as thats a good point to start.

Please dont hestitate to continue with that if i havent answered any of the deserved critism properly as what pestered you happened on my watch and i deserve an earbelting for it.

Can anyone tell me when,

Can anyone tell me when, where, and how big the wave will be, without having to stare at some crapy web cam. If you can i will buy into that.

ok so from a little blog on

ok so from a little blog on a trip down to the west country i get world wave pool war 1.
i dont care about people who have moved down to the west coast and now have the life of riley surfing when they want, there are plenty of us who don't have that luxuary so a pool would, help us,1,stop us driving down for 1/2 foot of swell and poluting the world,2, and 3 maybe stoop kooks from inland having a go as they can try it inland find out how hard it is,and then not paddle on in 30 to the dozen and scalp people with there under sized boards that they are never gonna ride.
Now if he is just blatently selling mug him of but not the idea ok.
yours sincerely an inland miser john xx

John,

I cant really understand the relevance of John's post, what is he on about? Webcams are bloody good ways of checking surf, at least you can see what it looks like!

Often more reliable than the reports!

Silly rant awhile back, some

Silly rant awhile back, some of the cams are so far off you can`t see shit.
Back on topic, wave pools are a great idea. Keeps a lot of people out of the sea. If they could make one that gives a real wave even better, then even more peps would stay at home. Rant over.
